The elevator dinged, and Daniel stepped off and headed down the hall toward Timothy’s office. Several people tapped at computers in the cubicles nearby. There might be fewer people there than during the day, but the CIA never truly slept. It wasn’t like America’s enemies only operated during East Coast business hours.

Not only that, but after the Level Three-E incident, the Company had increased all-hours staffing. Part of the reason was to recapture the escapees, but it was also designed to ensure that sufficient personnel were on duty should another major escape occur.

Of course, most of the Agency now knew that there was an ultramax beneath headquarters. Few people had evinced surprise. Daniel noticed that the few terse official reports on the incident had neatly omitted any mention of aliens. Matteas and his friends were only described as “terrorists, most likely connected to New Veil and other extremist organizations.”

No one now present paid the agent much attention. There was no reason to suspect anyone who walked around the upper levels in a suit with a CIA badge during extra staffing hours.

Daniel resisted a smirk. This was one of the few times that agency paranoia might work to his advantage. The more difficult part would be to gain entry without alerting anyone, but he had Ronni’s camera spoofer.

From what she and Big Gnome had told him after the Level Three-E incident, the device should still work since it was partially magical. The CIA would eventually get help from the PDA and release counter-measures for the more creative toys, but insularity and compartmentalization had made the agency more vulnerable than they should be.

I wonder if they have some sort of anti-magic woven into those cells? They had plenty of magicals down there.

Daniel activated the video-feed spoofer in his pocket. It was still disguised as a G.I. Joe action figure from the early decades of the twenty-first century.

He chuckled and shook his head, wondering if Ronni was simply messing with him when she pretended not to understand some of his references.

Then again, it’s all been kids’ toys. Maybe she doesn’t know about anything that’s not related to kids’ stuff.

Daniel waited a few seconds and stepped toward Timothy’s door. He looked around, and the hallway was empty. Confident that the cameras would show nothing, he pulled out the joker.

His mentor was paranoid enough that he’d figure out someone had broken into his office if he used conventional methods, but even Timothy had probably not planned for a magical card.

Taking a deep breath, the agent placed the card against the door. The lock clicked open.

That’s three times. Only two left. Funny how often I’m using it.

He opened the door, stepped inside, and closed it behind him.

Daniel hurried over to the computer and sat down. He slipped some gloves on and moved the mouse. The screen came to life, but the device was locked.

Yeah, I didn’t think it’d be that easy.

He plugged in the gray USB stick he’d taken from Nessie’s stash, and it hummed softly.

I hope that means it’s working.
